so (very) much thanks…

i don’t know how to thank each one of you, properly, for so much love during this difficult incident in my life. my heart is so grateful beyond what i could ever imagine. so thank you dearly for the sweet encouragements, the precious words in letters and messages, the beautiful grace in pretty presents, but mostly i am so SO thankful for you and your loving hearts and sweet spirits. i wonderfully know that we are all so adored by the amazing and powerful Lord, and nothing is greater than walking in His planned-out lives. Jesus Christ is imaginably glorious and worthy of all praise even in the hardest moments. love, lo

Lauren I had never heard of you before the accident. Yet I’ve been following the news of your progress. Keep going girl! And cling onto the words “for I know the plans I have for you” says the Lord..! Jer 29:11.

    • stacia joseph says:

you are a brave beautiful person. I know this because i have lost an eye in an accident and the emotional pain can be devasting. so don’t you despair because one eye CANNOT DEFINE WHO YOU ARE. Don’t dwell on it. Give yourself wings to fly. I’m saying this to you because i wasted time feeling depressed. It really isn’t worth it. Five years after my accident i got the procedure done to remove the eye by Dr. Gil Epstein in Miami and got the false one placed by Dr. David Wyatt also in Miami. No one can tell that i have a false eye unless i tell them and i got married last year September, and if i do say so myself i looked beautiful! I would love to send you my close up photo, I already know that you know things will work out but i just wanted you to see the proof. My email is missstacyj@hotmail.com

  32. Barbara says:

    Hi Lauren,
i followed posts on CaringBridge by your Mom and Dad since I heard about the
    accident. I am from Lithuania.
I could never imagine in my worst nightmares what it must feel like to face what you
have to face. It is something that is so horrible, and the worst part is that it will never go away.
So I wish you, first of all, that your continuing pain would finally be over. It’s been over a month,
    enough of the physical pain!
I wish you to get back to your earlier normal life as much as possible, I mean, to
    get someday a really good good hand prosthesis that would allow you to feel it and use it;
and I wish you the best recovery of your mind functions,
and the best cosmetic surgery on your left eye.
I also wish you an honest, caring and cheery friends around you,
and a positive boyfriend that would make you feel simply like a happy girl should feel.

    • Barbara says:

Ok guys I am sorry but what did I tell that was so wrong and tactless that you all rate my com “down”?…

You have a platform to shout from and you are shouting praise! You are truly a courageous woman of God. Thank you!

  36. Paul Devine says:

I am so glad to see that you made it through this. I was horrified to learn of your injuries. I followed your story on your caringbridge website each week. You have made remarkable progress in a very short time! The worst is all behind you now. The pain will still be there for a while, but it will continue to improve in the coming months. You’ll see. You will learn to cope with the injuries that remain. In time, the scars will heal and you will regain the same beauty that you had before. If you can make it through an ordeal like this, then it proves that nothing can ever stop you in life!

Everyone who read your story was very worried for you! I am so glad to read your message, and see that you made it back!

You are such beautiful person, inside and out, and you have changed my life in so many ways. It also made me focus on what is important in life: God and the relationships we nurture with the people we love. You have so many loving people in your life. And even if we do not know each other personally, I want you to know that you mean so much to me. You’re a true angel on earth. Thank you so much for the wonderful inspiration you are! Kat xo

I am so encouraged by your message of faith. We recently lost our baby son and it seems that when these terrible things happen we can either turn inside ourselves and fester in bitterness, or by God’s grace, give thanks that He is always good no matter what. That doesn’t mean that pain isn’t still very real, but I’m so grateful that you are choosing the way that brings peace and healing! You are demonstrating to us all what it means to be beautiful. God bless you!

  65. Anne Elizabeth says:

I have followed your family’s journal entries on caringbridge since your accident and am overwhelmed by y’alls faith. It is a truly a testimony. I am so sorry that you’ve been through what you have but I remember this song we sang in church when I was younger called “Refiner’s Fire” and it talked about God purifying and refining us to make us like pure gold. I don’t understand *why* things happen…and I have questioned this like any normal person… I do believe that those who God wants to use mightily are the very ones Satan wants to destroy. But like Job, God will never let Satan destroy those whom He loves and like it says about Job (42:12) – “God blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first.” So even though I know this must be so incredibly difficult, God will never leave you nor forsake you and that which Satan intended for evil, God intended for good. I pray that you feel His presence as you continue each day to stand strong in the Lord and the strength of His might. I will continue to pray for you through the years to come.

  66. Rosey says:

This message makes my day just as much as you being here makes your whole family happy for you :)

Hi Lauren! I’ve been reading about your accident and just wanted you to know that altho we don’t know each other in person – we know the same Lord. My prayers are with you and your family as you go thru this road of recovery. Just remember that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle – and being that you have a voice – who knows the millions of people you may be able to reach. I’m sure its hard to think of something like this while your going thru it – but I know that we serve a faithful God and He never leaves or forsakes us. Hello Lola, I’m from Brazil …. Me and my family are very Catholic. I would like to say that we pray for you … that you had great strength and recovered quickly.

God’s ways are a mystery …. but all He does is for our good, especially when it hurts more ….. these are times that we must seize the arms of Jesus ….. these moments of pain, He carries us on his lap …. and everything has a reason, as much as when we do not understand!

I’m sure God is on your side this time. And you being a beautiful model, who overcame an accident …. could give many examples of life for people who do not believe in God, Jesus and all his power.

Have strength ….. Jesus is with you.

You can count on our prayers.

May Our Lady be with you.

    Kisses with love.

  88. Oh Lo: I am praying for you day and night. I have always had bent, two knuckled fingers all my life and wondered why God allowed me to have them, but I think I am now understanding his plan for me to be a better person and be thankful for what he gave me. Although I only have two joints in my fingers, not 3 like the rest of the world, I can play guitar and type 100 word per minute, plus many other things, Although my pinkie fingers and ring fingers are bent and crooked I am very grateful for what I have. You too will overcome all the burdens of your injuries and live an even better life. I will pray for you, and you are in our prayers and thoughts. Be well, Jesus loves us. Their is a reason for all we do on this Earth. Love you although we’ve never met, Leslie Siegel.

  89. Mary says:

I “ditto” Abegail’s post and Jeremiah 29:11 two entries before this one. You will be such an inspiration to so many… just like your parents and their marriage testimony are an inspiration to alot of people, including me.

I will continue to follow you in your recovery and look forward to all the great things you will do in the future. God Bless you.

Keep up the excellent work in your therapy. You are making huge steps in getting back to your old self and new life. I say new life because it will be very different from before and dare I say better! God has a huge plan for you and it is clearly in progress already. This outer shell we live in is returning to dust one day and we need to keep our thoughts on the big unseen prize. I hope to meet you one day as you are an inspiration and a truly amazing soul. Big hugs and lots of love!

  93. livevitale says:

STAY STRONG AND CONTINUE TO DREAM BIG, Lauren. You have an amazing spirit and a beauty beyond compare. Your story has captured my heart, and I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t think about you. Now is the time to continue to do what you love and do best — touching the lives of others and showing the world that one must never give up and must instead persevere. Keep your head up and your thoughts ahead of the game as the Lord continues to strengthen you. You will conquer this, girl, and these extremely difficult times will pass. (sweet words my mom always said to me. Moms always know best, don’t they?)

I can only imagine how difficult things can get, but as I continue to look forward to you and your mom and dad’s inspiring updates on CaringBridge, I know every day is great accomplishment for you, and I truly hope and pray that everyday life just keeps getting easier and easier too. And by the way, your parents love you so much and are so darn proud of you!!

From one blogger to another, take care, peace to you, and God Bless you, Lauren. :)

  94. MIke Adams says:

I hope things go better than even you hope they will for you. You are an inspiration and depth of your character is showing the rest of us how we ourselves could do better. That said. I am a person who was shot in the eye at the age of 14. That changed my life, ultimately I believe for the best. For one it allowed me to see a level of compation that i did not realize existed in people, and two it changed the path of my life. I current work as an architect and the change in perspective the lose of sight in one eye creates has helped me communicate creative ideas in ways others often can not. I know that world of architecture and fashion often overlap. Hopefully that means that there is potential for you to have a similar experience to mine. Stay strong. You are awesome.

I’m so sorry about your accident, but what I want to know is when they’re going to let you out of there so that I can ask you out on a proper date. Hm? There are so many of us who adore you, I’m afraid all this publicity is going to make the competition a hundred times tougher!

  108. Jeanne Hash Buckner says:

Sweet Lauren, I have felt a sincere connection with you even before your injury. I am a friend that with to high school with your dad. I happened to reconnect with him on Facebook a couple of years ago and have used his and your mom’s story with many couples that are facing marriage difficulties. After learning of your injury, I have prayed for your recovery and for God to use you for His glory. You have been such an inspiration to me as well as to so many others. I try to remind myself each day when I get a negative thought to think about you and how your attitude is so positive when negativity could take over. Thank you for being such an inspiration. I pray your pain will be gone completely and your PRECIOUS smile will radiantly shine. Thank you again for being such a strong young woman in the Lord. You are a true role model for our young generation. :)

  109. Rene Leach says:

  111. JW says:

Hi Lauren: I have a slightly different take on your accident. I’ve heard “Why would Jesus allow her to walk into a spinning airplane propeller?” I’ve worked in the aviation industry for 40+ years and have seen, heard, read about the poor unfortunate people who have walked into spinning airplane propellers. Almost all of them were met with an instantaneous and horrifying death! You, on the other hand, were spared that fate. You are still among the ones that love you: your family, friends, associates, and admirers. I’m also a Christ-follower and HE WAS WITH YOU and spared you! What this does for your career and work is unknown but please get healed up first and do NOT isolate yourself. Isolation is deadly. I wish you all God’s best from here on out…

  117. Wolf says:

Prosthetics (by and large) suck with a few extremely practical exceptions – but driving is very important. After I lost my right hand in 2008 I was not allowed to drive without (very costly) vehicle modifications. Driving modified cars is alright for starters, but not a long term option – rental cars, garage replacement cars etc are all a problem then. – – So, I trained hard, taught myself some real trick techniques for steering and operating the vehicle, and managed to persuade the head guy of our road traffic administration to have me re-do the driving test with him. We did that a few months ago and I did pass : ) now I am back to driving unmodified vehicles and I am legally certified to doing so – without any aid, prosthetic, and so on. Things take time though. It took me about 2-3 years to perfect technique and skill. Hang in there :)

    • Paul Devine says:

Take a good long time, Lauren, to learn how to cope with your disabilities, before you try driving. I’m sure that you want to get back to doing as much as possible, as soon as possible. But, you should really be careful, and spend months learning your limitations.

Have people drive for you, at least for the next six months.

You have progressed so far, and so fast. But, it will be a full year or more before you will really go back to being the person that you were before.

Be cautious and careful, even walking around your house and doing simple things like getting in and out of a tub. Remember, your injuries will mostly heal, but some weakness will always be there in the bones that were injured. So, you need to protect yourself from further injury by always being careful.

You will know how your healing is progressing by the amount of pain that you are feeling. As the pain begins to fade, you will be stronger and able to do more. But, it will take a long time, measured in months, not days or weeks.

Please be careful, and always keep in mind that your body will never be as strong as it was, and that you need to always protect yourself from any further injury.

You are a young girl yet. You have plenty of time left to do all the things that you ever imagined in life. So, there is no need to rush. Take time to heal, first.

You will know inside, when you are really ready!

  118. Betty says:

    Lauren,

I want you to know I care. I pray.
    Hug your Mom for me.
My heart aches for you all.

My son’s girlfriend of 3 1/2 year also lost her eye due to an accident. Her cousin threw a lacrosse stick and it hit her eye. My son’s girlfriend is a beautiful young woman who when I first met at 17 was a shy girl who wore her bangs to cover her eye. Today at 20 she has grown and gained courage and strength and now wears her bangs so we can see her beautiful eyes. It’s been a journey for Brittany to find her inner strength and I am so proud of her. You too can do this!

  140. Traci Carr says:

Lauren, My name is Traci, I’m age 40, in Virginia. I have two 20 year olds, a 17 year old and a 16 year old. One by birth and the others adopted. As a mother, my heart goes out to your mother. It is so hard for us to see our children suffer. As a believer, I am inspired. God is ALREADY using you and your family to bless others. I had never heard of “Lauren Scruggs” until your accident. I don’t believe that it was God’s perfect plan, for this to happen to you, but I do believe that He can use it FOR HIS GOOD. I’ve heard the phrase, “If He allowed it, then He will use it.” And HE IS!

I saw your picture for the first time since your accident on the news clip today, and you are still gorgeous. I can’t imagine how you feel, or what you have been through, but you are in my prayers and the prayers of many. I will continue to follow the story of your recovery. I can’t wait to see what all God has in store for your future! I’m sure it’s not what you would have planned for yourself, but it is going to be even more amazing I’m sure, because that is the character of the God we serve!

    Your Sister in Christ,

Lauren, I lost my left eye to cancer as an infant and have had many follow up surgeries over the years. This may be too early to think about this, but my Doctor at UCLA (Robert Goldberg M.D.-Jules Stein Eye Institute) is a world reknowned expert at socket reconstruction and implants of Artificial eyes or “Ocular Prosthesis” if you want to use the big word. I have seen him, along with some incredible Eye designers, do amazing work for Actors, models and others including numerous veterans from the gulf wars and I would so recommend that you give them a call. his number is 310-206-8250. I’m a stage actor and he has made all the difference in my life to look and feel normal. Hang in there Lauren. You have a great life ahead of you. :-)

You are amazing! I stumbled across a picture of you leaving the hospital or some facility, and you look fantastic. You are going to have an incredible life, with more grace and beauty than you’ve imagined. Bless you.

  144. Amber Holland says:

I am 34 now but when I was 22, I lost my left eye in an almost fatal car accident, along with scarring up my nose and the whole left side of my face. It takes a little while to get used to depth perception with the lost of your eye. I still sometimes turn corners too sharp and run in to the corner of a door frame or a wall.LOL I’m sure prosthetic eye doctors have talked to you already, and if not, they should be. I’m from Louisiana and my prosthetic eye dr. is from New Orleans(Dr. Wyatt) and he makes beautiful eyes. My prosthetic eye is beautiful but I don’t wear it because my eyelid and all around there is messed up, so for me I just wear a patch. You still look beautiful and never let anyone make you feel otherwise. I wish I looked as good as you look after my accident. Believe me, you will have bad days, but you will have alot more good days. Try to keep your head up and wishing you the best.–Amber

  145. Lauren, I am so sorry about your accident, and although I am sure it will be harder to deal with on some days more than others, I truly believe you are destined for greatness as you are already making an impact on lots of people all over the world. Your grateful attitude is an inspiration to me and so many others whose lives you are now touching and will continue to touch as your life goes on…you are a beautiful person, inside and out, and I wish you all the best!

  146. Emily Palka says:

Lauren I have been thinking of you and your family, and following your story since it first broke on the today show, and you have affected me greatly. I’m a actor in Los Angeles who admittedly, felt an uncomfortable shock to put myself in your position and what my life (spent in large parts dedicated to my physical features) would turn into. Since then I have spent a lot more time focusing on my inside and what I’m offering the world, community, less fortunate, ect. Even just being more forgiving and having patience, second chances and such. You are SO beautiful. I just saw your video on the today show today where you were walking to your car- and it almost seemed like you smiled, and that brought me to tears! You have SO MANY exciting things in your near future- please don’t cry, we all have so much love and inspiration for you! To the many blessings ahead of you.. cheers girl :)

  147. Karen says:

Lauren may your healing process get easier and easier everyday. Life has something far and beyond great for you. You’re an example to many that beauty is not only outside but inside. Keep strong girl and hold on to that faith in God. He brought you to it, he’ll bring you through it!

  150. Mark Thomas says:

    Lauren,
Clearly there are no magic words to ease anyone’s pain at a time like this. I simply wanted to offer this word of encouragement. I know that i don’t know anything about you. The real you. I am making an assumption that you trust in Christ by the things I see on your blog. I only wanted to offer this; rest in the knowledge that you are a daughter of the king. You are a beloved one in THE Beloved One. John 17:23 says, “…that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” That word “even as” means in the exact same way, manner, and measure. The Father loves you in the exact same way He loves Jesus. He could not love you any more. Nothing can add to that or change that. It’s who you ARE by spiritual birth. We are never to be identified by what we do, but by who we are. Having been a former NFL athlete, I know what its like to be identified by what I do. I learned quickly that it changes. He doesn’t. You are His princess! Infinite beauty. Infinite worth. What is amazing is that what we see, He doesn’t see. And what we don’t see, He sees.
Please know that you are prayed for and thought of. You are loved and appreciate. You are prized and highly valued. Not because of what you do, but because of who you are and who you belong to. May the Lord strengthen you during this time. May He be so close to you that you hear His very breath. Blessings and peace to you.
    Your brother in Christ,
    Mark

  151. Lauren says:

    You write so beautifully.
He has a plan for you, one that so few can take on, but you can, Lauren.
You are so incredibly inspiring and I know that you will only continue to inspire, as this is only the beginning of your journey. He has much in store for you.
Your spirit is so sweet and I pray for your recovery, so you can spread your message and light to others.
    Take care and keep faith.

  152. JH says:

I have never left a comment on a blog in my life…However, I felt compelled to write this. When I first heard your story you were referenced as a “model” involved in a horrific accident. When people are referred to as a “model” you assume runway models and fashion. After seeing your picture today and hearing your own words about your personal faith in the Lord. I decided to look up the word “model” in the dictionary and of course there are a variety of meanings… but the number one meaning is “a standard or example for imitation or comparison” I feel you have shown people what it truly means to be a “model”.

    God Bless

  153. Lauren, I’ve been following your story for weeks now and as your sister in Christ have prayed for you and am so proud of you. You exemplify what it means to find the beauty in the storm and are leaving quite a large beauty mark on the hearts and lives of many throughout the world. I pray your continued strength and encouragement during this difficult season and trust that God will make every moment of suffering turn out in your favor. In 2007, I went through a health battle with a malignant mass in my lung (more details on my blog) and didn’t know what I had to go through such a difficult experience, especially when I was just trying to live for God. Now that I’m on the other side, married, an 8-month old baby girl, ministry opportunities, etc, God has given me double for my trouble. I believe that God will do the same for you and that the anointing and power of God on your life will increase as a result of your suffering. Tozer said that those whom God uses greatly have been hurt deeply. I’m looking forward to seeing the great ways that God will use your life in the days, weeks and years to come. The BEST is YET to COME. -Love, Emonne

  154. Rach says:

    Dear Lauren,
You are so refreshing. Last month I saw your story on the internet and my heart broke for you. As I read more into your story and heard updates from your parents in which they spoke of God, I realized that you have been blessed. God chose you to glorify Him in what would seem and impossible circumstance; what an honor! I have kept up with the CaringBridge blog and have been amazed. I am a senior in college in Colorado and have realized after years of meeting and befriending hundreds of people, that there isn’t an abundance of girls this age who are willing to have a strong relationship with Christ, especially someone like you who is gifted in so many ways. I can’t express how excited I am to see where God’s path will take you now… I have so much respect for you and admiration for your unwavering faith.
I will continue to pray for you and your family!
    Sincerely,
    Rach

  155. Rob Bratcher says:

    Hello Lauren,
I wrote in your mother’s blog on CaringBridge just a moment ago.So I guess this would be my second comment ever. lol. I just wanted to say if you ever need someone to talk and share your pain with I’m here. If you read my comment there you would understand so I won’t say much. I just wanted to say God bless you and please stay close to God. It’s the only thing saving me as well.

  156. Ernie Meyer says:

Lauren, You have shown true courage though your entire accident. You may lay awake at night and cry. You may experience pain. You may even ask why. You may not even feel you have the courage evryone sees in you but trust me, You have courage.
It takes courage to cry. It take courage to hurt and it also take courage to heal. You have all of that and we are so proud of you. If there is anything I can do to help you, feel free to contact me. My wife and I are inspired by your courage.

  157. Hayley says:

Stay strong. You will learn soon that you are beautiful still. My own experiences have taught me the same lesson.

Please know that you are loved…. across all the miles to Ohio by people you don’t even know. God Bless you and your family. Our prayers will continue!!

  159. Nicolette says:

Lauren, I heard about your accident, and my heart cried out to our Lord to continue to hold you through your trials. I am so glad that you did not turn from the Lord during this period of change in your life. I had an accident 2 years ago that rocked my world, and only made it through by turning to Him, surrendering my life yet again, and trusting the light in my soul. My journey is now down a new, different path, but the Lord has washed me again with his Blessings. Hold tight to your faith.
Stand tall in the light of our Lord. My prayers are with you and your family. Praise the Lord, we are BLESSED!!
Forever a child of God, Nicolette

  162. Lauren,

You are an amazing young woman of faith. I have been following your story and just saw a little blurb on E! News that led me here. I’m not even sure how but God is going to use something aweful for His good. Even just through this blog and your stories in the news, you have no idea the lives you are touching. I am so encouraged by your hopeful spirit, I had no idea you were a sis in Christ till I came here. I will be praying for you and your family, I know that we can’t understand what you are going through but we can definitely lift you up in prayer. Lots of love to you,

Your positive attitude and faith has been a shining example for all those suffering difficult times. I saw a video of you yesterday for the first time since the accident. You are even more beautiful than before. Your inner beauty shines through! Keep the faith. God has great plans for you! In my prayers…Jackie

    Hi Lauren,

I’m a complete stranger who read about your accident and felt bad that this happened to you. I was so heartened when I just saw the picture of you walking out of the rehab center with your family and hope that you will not despair and cry anymore. You are still completely gorgeous and you’re just as beautiful as you ever were. Heal up and know that you have tons of admirers who look forward to seeing you on the cover of Vogue someday! You’re gorgeous and everyone can’t wait to read more posts and see more videos about fashion on your blog!

All the best to you and your family. Be brave.

  166. Tammy says:

You are a beautiful girl, Lauren, inside and out.

  167. Kevin says:

Your comments were so positive and shows how grounded you are in your faith, how incredibly inspiring. Stay strong, keep the faith, God’s gift of grace is certainly with you…..

  168. Wolf says:

I am one of the people that always listens to radio interviews on our “old folks”/ “classic” channel in our small but diverse and dense country (Switzerland, Europe).

Every now and then a person was interviewed that had happened to have lost their eyesight as a young person. Mostly they were interviewed in their sixties, and for reasons unrelated to their blindness. – But it always emerged that they reported, when asked, that it took them around 10-15 years to get their bearings straight.

So, I lost my right hand in 2008 (when I was 41 years old) due to some tumor tissue starting colonies in my middle hand. Right then and there I knew that I was in for the long haul. There was absolutely no need for me to verbalize or pinpoint my massive disappointment about that and life in general then and there. I knew, then and there that, give or take 5 years or 10, that I *will* be fine as long as I make it through the initial stress. As it appears, I am now almost 4 years into trying to get to grips with that situation. Yeah, I’m most definitely not there yet, and, most definitely, I *will* be getting there.

First of all, as expected, improvements are absolutely massive and mind boggling but only over a period of 1-2 years (not over days or weeks). I feel like mid way now. I have days that are absolutely perfect – last years I only had hours that were perfect. The “perfect feeling” periods are like blotches that slowly start to coalesce.

Secondly, the only prosthetic that can fully integrate with your brain and body is a body powered arm. I am one of these kinesthetically gifted persons, I still swim international competitions and my arms and shoulders literally bathe in muscle fine control and power, and a few physiotherapists told me to stick to body powered arms no matter what. They said these will have to grow on me for at least five years and for me not to give up. So far I must say they were right – however we had to modify the setup of the arm to make it fully functional : ) I have cosmetic arms and a myoelectric arm but these are not nearly as nice to wear. To each their own. Prosthetic technician earn an awful amount of money selling you “bionic” hands or arms, but no person that advised me that did NOT benefit from these sales advised me to get these. Friends and physiotherapy friends, ex girl friends also physiotherapists – all advised me to go body powered / cable controlled. Best for my skeletomuscular system, best functionally, cheapest, most durable. If that doesn’t work, I go without prosthetic. Works rather well too, learn some tricks and that’s it.

Thirdly, one will be, come across as and be treated as a disabled person. That sucks at first, but as that one is there to stay, best to accept it and make the best of it. I now wear red prosthetic hands so people immediately know there will be no negotiation of that fact.

Fourthly, life changes quite a bit. Time passes differently and I found myself in time holes, trapped. My cell phone now speaks the time in regular intervals, that helps. My balance was off so much just with missing a hand, having lost an eye you will have even more balance issues. What did the trick for me was extensive extensive butterfly swimming. The resulting body core strength makes up for reduced balance : ) once you can flap 6 x 200m butterfly in one calm sequence you will understand why this is the most mood lifting balance giving peace giving sports to do, in that situation, ever. There are no dry land exercises that compare. Just take your time, give or take a few years.

Five, stump and phantom pain. Mine are bad, and getting slowly worse. But there is a way – that one can learn – to zone out, mentally, and focus on other stuff. Meditation, prayer, focus – for me extensive water sports. It is very important to learn to live with these strange pain signals. Drugs might be of limited to no help, they might incapacitate one’s ability to drive, and they have side effects. I find that drugs slow me down too much – and I love my brain being slept out, crisp and awake. So I compress my stump well to keep congestion and stump / phantom pain down, and that’s it. Lots of sports, sleep, hot tub, sauna. Also I wear baby leg warmers off Etsy (google that one). They keep the stump warm and I can still type.

    Six: one handed tricks.

Tying swim trunks and shoe laces – I figured out how to do these. Anyone can figure that out. Just play with the cord / shoestring and figure out what works best for you : ) otherwise check the web, or drop me a note and I will video how I do it.

Nails. Hard to cut finger nails… I just use a nail file. I file them every few days. When I am in my bloke mind I use the Dremel (watch “The World’s Fastest Indian” with Anthony Hopkins and you will understand).

Open bags. Always have a big sharp scissors with you, and, at home, and, at your office.

Driving. I think I should place instructions on how to pull that off on the web. One handed / two armed driving with perfect steering wheel / indicator light control. There will be time for that, that one’s not a hurry.

    Seven. Uncharted territory.

Google it. Search the web. If it isn’t there, do it yourself. My website is full of stuff I did for the first time – prosthetic socket heating, red hand design, … etc – if you are the first to do or try something, take a camera, take shots and share them. We all want to learn, too. We all don’t just want to share.

    Eight. Support.

Amputee communities abound. You’ll find them. One good one is http://www.empoweringamputees.org

    After that, go for it.

  169. I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through so much.
I had not heard of you/your blog before… glad I did. And, it’s so cool you’re sharing your faith through all this.
Thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

    Hey, Lauren –

The other day I caught the tail end of a news story where some photographer (not sure who he was with) apparently snapped a photo of you leaving the clinic for an excursion. I think you were wearing a ball cap and a denim shirt , and you had a bandage over your eye, but oh my, you’re still strikingly beautiful, Lauren! A serious heart-melter. You still have those amazing movie star good looks with that Heidi Klum smile. You’re one of those rare beauties like Daryl Hannah who could wear an eye patch and make it a fashion statement!

I was going to say that you’re going to be a star, but you already are. God bless you, Lauren. You are utterly adorable. (dreamy sigh…)

  175. Tee says:

Thank you and your family for sharing your story. It is amazing to see your strong will and inner strength. I admire your faith and your trust in the lord. As a young woman I am loving your love of the lord and your willingness to spread his message. My prayers are with you and your family. Continue to trust the lord…..He will see you through this journey!! You are an inspiration!!

  176. Steph says:

I can’t even imagine what you have been going through. As much as it’s painful and draining- you are so strong and you made it through this for a reason! Pictures surfaced of you out since the accident and you are SO BEAUTIFUL, words can’t even describe. Nothing has changed in that respect. Hopefully you will get back to your normal daily routines again soon! Keep your head up, because amazing things are coming your way and you deserve all the success and happiness! I’m a huge fan of your blog and your positive attitude is an amazing influence on all readers. All the best to you in your future! Ps- you’re so lucky to have an amazing and supportive family around you that loves you the way they do! You’re one lucky girl. xo

  177. Ken Burner says:

What up Lo? I was just thinking about you. I read about your accident. I had a skiing accident some years ago. “Broke my back” I guess they would say. I couldn’t even urinate on my own after that. Thank God, after multiple surgeries I’m OK now. I know about pain. Please be careful about the pain meds. They will suck you in to wanting them for life before you know it. It’s tough for sure, but you can handle it right?

If you, your family. ever want to “Escape to Wisconsin” [our tourism motto] you’re welcome here. Just drop me a note.

    Ken

  178. Spark says:

I first read about your story on People.com. It’s so incredibly inspiring to read about your recovery and the support your family is providing. I try to put myself in your situation and I think how easy it would be to give up and start feeling sorry for myself. I know every day is probably a struggle and you have your moments; however, the fact that you’re able to rise above this and move forward with your life – while at the same time motivating other girls to overcome challenges – is so amazing. I look forward to read more about your recovery and the great progress you’re making.

Lauren keep up your faith and strength but know that it’s okay to let yourself feel bad. God understands all of our emotions…anger, resentment, sadness….it’s okay. I speak from my own personal experience having lost my right eye in an accident. Things will get better!

  181. Adam says:

So glad to be a FB friend of yours. You are inspiring and obviously born for a greater purpose in life.
Your words from the heart are so very kind and compassionate. Anyone who knows you must be truly blessed.
    Thank be to you Lauren

    Lauren,

Wow, you are so inspiring. I live in the metroplex and am familiar with the airport where your accident happened and think of you every time I pass it. I have two children including a preteen son who also thinks that your strength and super fast recovery took so much drive and admiration. Just wanted you to know you have inspired myself and my family to try harder.

Also, I heard about your jeans. I know how hard it is to find that perfect pair. :) Anyway, I have a brand new pair of True Religion still with the tags. You look tiny so I am not sure if they would fit you but you could have them tailored to fit you perfectly. I don’t know if they are like the ones you lost but I would love for you to have them. Please feel free to comment back to me in some way that I could give you my email address or phone number if you have any interest. (sorry! I am new to twitter and only joined so I could comment on your blog, it may already give you the email) It would make me really happy for you to have these jeans. Thank you for inspiring us all!,

  183. Heather says:

HI Lauren. We have never met, but I have closely followed your story since first seeing you on the news. It is so inspiring to see you recovering and it can’t possibly be an easy process by any means. Before your accident you showed us beauty and inspiration in the form of gorgeous clothes and pictures,(which being a shopaholic myself I can totally relate), but now you are showing us in a completely different way. Your courage, faith and will is more beautiful than any fashion show could ever be. You my dear are beautiful on the outside and showing everyone in the world the beauty you possess on the inside as well. I wish you all the best, continued success with all you do and a speedy recovery. God bless you and your family.

  187. Amanda Gass says:

Lauren, ever since hearing about the disheartening news of your accident, my heart has been very heavy for you. I have been following articles and praying for the will of God in your life all along the way. I wrote this some time back, and was compelled to get it out and pass it along to you. I hope it will touch your heart and maybe any others that choose to read it.

    “Never Gave up on me”

I cried to you last night, hoping you would hear my prayers
It seems like its been so long now, it was hard to fight back the tears
I have sat here many times, not knowing what to say
The thoughts are always there, but the words are hard to relay

I’ve tried to come to terms, with the changes in my life
Sometimes it seemed, as if I would lose the fight
You’ve been calling to me, to open up my heart
To let you relieve, what’s been tearing me apart.

    You never gave upon me,
clearly I can see that now
No matter what all I have been through
You’ve always held me up somehow
    Just when I thought
I couldn’t go on another day
The sun would shine through my window
    And down upon my face

You know me in and out completely, to the very depths of my soul
Whenever I was so lonely, you were there to give me hope
You’ve held my hand, you’ve guided me
You have never left my side, Lord I will worship you
For all the days of my life!

You never gave up on me, I live my life for you now
I will never run away from anything, I have no reason to back down
I feel stronger than before, I can go on everyday
As the sun shines through my window,
    And down upon my face!

Many blessings, and much love to you Lauren! I will keep you in my heart and always in my prayers.

    Always,
    Amanda Gass
